With their tense contortions or rigid postures, the faceless subjects in Ben Zank’s photographs evoke emotions that are hard to describe yet surprisingly familiar.

Based in New York City, Zank transforms everyday scenarios and solitary figures into intriguing visual puzzles. Through mismatched socks, bold clothing, and awkward poses, he creates an uncanny realism that prompts a visceral reaction from viewers.

Last summer, Zank’s work was showcased at the Festival Cargo Les Photographiques in Saint-Nazaire, France. The event, which began in 2022, features multiple outdoor exhibition spaces for contemporary photographers.

For the festival, Zank created an outdoor installation with large-scale images mounted on leaning wooden pallets and brick walls. These minimalist, Earth-toned portraits harmonized with the natural setting, spread across the open grounds.

Currently, Zank is developing a new series that explores the lives of strangers in their own homes, moving away from his usual staged environments. More of his work can be seen on Instagram.
