Senator Bernie Sanders continues to emerge as one of the most vocal critics of former President Trump. This weekend, as the Senate gears up for a pivotal vote-a-rama aimed at passing tax cuts favoring the wealthy, Sanders is set to resume his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour next weekend in Los Angeles, California.
In the interim, the Independent senator from Vermont has expressed his concerns regarding Trump’s trade policies.
In a recent statement, Sen. Sanders articulated:
Having been at the forefront of the campaign against harmful free trade agreements with China, Mexico, and other low-wage nations, I recognize the urgent need for trade strategies that prioritize American workers over the interests of corporate executives. This includes the implementation of targeted tariffs that can effectively deter companies from relocating American jobs and manufacturing overseas. The crux of the matter is that we require a sensible and equitable trade policy. Trump’s blanket tariffs are not the solution. A sweeping sales tax on imports will only inflate prices on essential goods for the American public. Instead of exacerbating costs, we should strive to make products more affordable.
Moreover, and perhaps most critically, Trump’s actions are bordering on illegality and represent a troubling move towards authoritarian governance. By imposing these tariffs, he is overstepping Congressional authority and violating existing trade agreements under dubious “emergency” claims—despite the absence of any real crises. Essentially, he is consolidating power disproportionately, which is utterly unacceptable.
