Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is not merely hosting rallies to combat the influence of oligarchy; he is also vocally addressing the accomplices in Trump’s quest for authoritarian governance.
In a recent statement, Senator Sanders declared:
This morning, President Trump has ordered the FBI to arrest Judge Hannah Dugan of the Milwaukee trial court, charging her with obstructing law enforcement, a federal offense.
Let’s not mince words. Trump’s actions against Judge Dugan are not about immigration; they are symptomatic of a broader drift toward authoritarianism. He is overstepping Congressional boundaries, litigating against media outlets that criticize him, attacking universities that disagree with his views, and intimidating law firms that stand up to him. He is even disregarding a unanimous Supreme Court ruling regarding the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from El Salvador. Furthermore, he is threatening to impeach judges who make rulings contrary to his interests.
This latest assault on the judiciary by Trump, targeting Judge Dugan, is fundamentally about consolidating unchecked power. He seeks to dismantle any institution that poses a challenge to his authority. Trump’s actions reveal a blatant disregard for the Constitution, the principle of separation of powers, and the rule of law. His intent is clear: to amass greater power for himself. It’s time for my colleagues in the Republican Party who still uphold the Constitution to confront this growing authoritarianism.
Senator Sanders is absolutely correct. Trump’s behavior is alarming. The Supreme Court’s tacit approval of his lawlessness, coupled with a slim margin of voters in swing states who opted to ignore his transgressions and return him to office, has effectively opened the floodgates.
Immigration serves merely as a smokescreen for Trump’s true agenda: a consolidation of power within the executive branch. For decades, Senator Sanders has warned about the emergence of an oligarchic structure tied to income inequality. From the onset of Trump’s first term, Democrats have rallied to protect the Constitution and the integrity of our democracy.
Many Americans chose to overlook these warnings, which is how the nation found itself under the leadership of a president with a growing criminal record who is actively seeking to arrest judges.
