Bernie Sanders Nails Trump For Wasting $38 Million To Weaken Civil Rights

In a particularly striking example of mismanagement, the Trump administration squandered a staggering $38 million in taxpayer dollars on a scheme that effectively paid investigators to sit idly while it systematically dismantled the Department of Education. During this period, a shocking 90% of discrimination cases were dismissed without even a cursory review.

It’s hardly surprising that an administration so eager to sidestep accountability would ignore claims of discrimination affecting students.

The glaring hypocrisy of an administration purporting to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse, while simultaneously wasting taxpayer resources to push an ideological agenda, is hard to overlook.

Senator Bernie Sanders commissioned a GAO report, which highlighted several key findings:

  • In March 2025, after the administration attempted to lay off nearly half of the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) workforce, those employees were placed on paid administrative leave for nine months, costing taxpayers up to $38 million while effectively preventing investigators from fulfilling their duties.

  • During the government shutdown of 2025, the administration sought another round of layoffs, reducing OCR to a mere 10% of its original capacity.

  • By December, the administration backtracked, reinstating staff and halting lawsuits, but some of the damage was irreversible. Today, significantly fewer investigators are available to assist students compared to 2024.

  • Throughout this turmoil, over 9,000 discrimination complaints were lodged with the OCR, and an astounding 90% were dismissed without any examination.

Without the diligence of members of the Senate Democratic caucus, such as Senator Sanders, the American public might remain oblivious to this administration’s role in facilitating discrimination and eroding accountability.

Senator Sanders emphasized:

Every child in America deserves access to quality education, regardless of their location, religious beliefs, or disabilities.

Yet, under the Trump administration, half of the Education Department’s employees dedicated to safeguarding student civil rights were dismissed, and taxpayers bore the brunt of a $38 million expenditure to keep investigators from carrying out their responsibilities. This is simply unacceptable.

Sanders raises a crucial point.

Many of the students adversely affected by discrimination are those with disabilities. Legal requirements mandate accommodations for these disabilities, yet students facing discrimination based on disability, race, or religion now find themselves without the means for recourse, thanks to the dismantling of the government’s investigative capabilities.

When frustrated citizens implore Democrats to take action, they often overlook the reality that Democrats and their Independent allies are exerting every ounce of power they possess to hold this administration accountable.

It is vital for the American public to recognize that this administration is enabling discrimination against students. Consequently, the reports and communications generated by elected Democrats and their Independent caucus members are essential.
