Money market accounts are a popular choice for individuals looking to earn higher interest rates on their savings. With deposit interest rates, including money market account rates, on the decline over the past few years, it’s more important than ever to compare MMA rates to ensure you’re maximizing your earnings.

According to the FDIC, the national average money market account rate currently stands at 0.56%. While this may seem low, it’s important to note that just four years ago, the average rate was a mere 0.07%. This means that, by historical standards, money market account rates are still relatively high.

Despite the national average, some of the top money market accounts are offering over 4% APY. These rates may not last long, so it’s advisable to consider opening a money market account now to take advantage of the high rates available today.

When determining how much you can earn from a money market account, it’s essential to consider the annual percentage yield (APY). This metric takes into account the base interest rate and how often interest compounds, with money market account interest typically compounding daily.

For example, if you were to deposit $10,000 into a money market account with an average interest rate of 0.56% and daily compounding, your balance would grow to $10,056.16 after one year. In comparison, choosing a high-yield money market account with a 4% APY would result in a balance of $10,408.08 at the end of the year, including $408.08 in interest.

While money market accounts offer the potential for higher interest rates, they often come with restrictions. These may include a higher minimum balance requirement to earn the best rate or avoid fees, as well as limits on the number of withdrawals allowed per month (typically six).

While it’s unlikely to find a bank offering a 7% interest rate on a money market account, some local banks and credit unions may run limited-time promotional rates that reach as high as 7%. However, these promotional rates often apply to a limited balance.

In conclusion, money market accounts can be a valuable tool for earning higher interest rates on your savings. By comparing rates and understanding the potential earnings, you can make an informed decision on whether a money market account is the right choice for your financial goals.
