Koby Nahmias is a pioneer in the cultured meat industry, leading the way with his company Future Meat, now known as Believer Meats. In a recent interview, Nahmias discussed the environmental impact of traditional meat production and the potential for lab-grown meat to revolutionize the industry.

According to a study published in the journal Nature Food, meat production accounts for 57% of greenhouse gas emissions in the human food supply. Nahmias and his team at Believer Meats are working to address this issue by growing meat from animal cells in bioreactors. They have achieved a significant milestone by producing meat for less than $6 a pound, with their product generating 80% less greenhouse gas emissions, using 99% less land, and 96% less water than traditionally farmed meats.

In the interview, Nahmias discussed the potential for lab-grown meats to offer health benefits such as lower cholesterol levels and the ability to create perfectly marbled or novel meats. He also highlighted the energy and environmental challenges involved in scaling up production to compete with traditional meats like beef, chicken, pork, and seafood.

Believer Meats recently closed a record-breaking $347 million venture investment, the largest in the history of lab-grown meat. This funding will help the company bring its products to market and build a production facility in the United States. Nahmias mentioned that we could see Believer Meats on store shelves as early as 2023.

Overall, Nahmias and his team at Believer Meats are leading the way in sustainable meat production, offering a viable alternative to traditional animal agriculture. Their innovative approach has the potential to significantly reduce the environmental impact of meat consumption while providing consumers with high-quality, ethically produced meats.
