The Rise of Better Auth: A Game-Changing Authentication Tool by Ethiopian Founder

In the world of developer infrastructure tools, it’s a rare sight to see a solo founder making waves. Even more so when that founder hails from Africa. Meet Bereket Engida, a self-taught programmer from Ethiopia, who is quietly revolutionizing user authentication with his startup, Better Auth.

Better Auth offers an open-source framework that simplifies how developers manage user authentication. This innovative tool has garnered attention from major investors, including Peak XV, Y Combinator, P1 Ventures, and Chapter One, who recently injected $5 million in seed funding into the startup.

What sets Better Auth apart is not just its impressive investor lineup but Engida’s journey in building the product entirely in Ethiopia before venturing to the U.S. His programming journey began at 18 when he took matters into his own hands after a friend declined to help him build an e-commerce search app. Through remote software jobs and creating a web analytics platform, Engida identified a common pain point: authentication.

Existing tools like Auth0, Firebase, and NextAuth fell short in flexibility and customization, prompting Engida to develop a TypeScript-based authentication framework. This framework, now known as Better Auth, offers developers easy access to user data, supports common permissions scenarios, and allows for seamless scalability through plug-ins.

In just six months of relentless work from his bedroom in Ethiopia, Engida launched Better Auth on GitHub. The response was overwhelming, with 150,000+ weekly downloads, 15,000+ GitHub stars, and a thriving community of 6,000+ Discord members.

Better Auth’s appeal lies in its simplicity and security. Unlike hosted services, Better Auth keeps all user data on-premise, giving developers full control over their databases. This feature has resonated with early-stage AI startups seeking customizable authentication flows that integrate seamlessly with proprietary APIs.

As Better Auth gears up for the future, Engida plans to enhance core features and introduce a paid enterprise infrastructure while maintaining the product’s community-centric ethos. The startup, which recently graduated from Y Combinator, marks a significant milestone for Ethiopian entrepreneurs looking to make a global impact.

Engida’s journey with Better Auth not only showcases the power of innovation but also paves the way for aspiring African founders to dream big. As he continues to push boundaries and empower developers worldwide, Better Auth stands as a testament to the endless possibilities of talent and perseverance.
