The Gates Foundation to Exhaust Funds in 20 Years, Bill Gates Pledges to Donate 99% of Fortune
Microsoft co-founder turned billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates made a groundbreaking announcement today regarding the future of the Gates Foundation. Gates revealed that the foundation will have just 20 years to exhaust its coffers and wind down operations. He has committed to donating 99% of his estimated $107 billion fortune to the foundation, with plans to donate over $200 billion in the next two decades.
Gates shared his decision on his website, Gates Notes, stating, “This decision comes at a moment of reflection for me. In addition to celebrating the foundation’s 25th anniversary, this year also marks several other milestones: It would have been the year my dad, who helped me start the foundation, turned 100; Microsoft is turning 50; and I turn 70 in October.”
With this monumental donation, Gates’s contribution is expected to be the second-largest philanthropic gift in U.S. history, adjusted for inflation. Warren Buffett, with an estimated net wealth of $160 billion, is set to hold the top spot. This move signifies a significant shift from the foundation’s previous directive to close 20 years after Gates’s passing, as he remains in good health at 69 years old.
Established 25 years ago, the Gates Foundation has already allocated over $100 billion towards various causes, primarily focused on health, education, global development, and gender equality. The foundation has been instrumental in aiding low-income countries combat endemic diseases like malaria.
Impact in the Face of Foreign Aid Cuts
The timing of Gates’s announcement coincides with the Trump administration’s efforts to slash foreign aid, including a significant reduction in USAID funding. USAID, an agency managing over $35 billion in congressional appropriations annually, has been affected by these cuts. In contrast, the Gates Foundation plans to continue its substantial annual spending of around $9 billion through 2045.
