In a recent episode of “Real Time,” host Bill Maher expressed his confusion over the multiple oil tankers being attacked while passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Just a week after praising President Trump for his actions against Iran, Maher admitted he didn’t understand the situation. Maher questioned why the U.S. couldn’t control the strait, despite having military superiority in other areas.
Guest Lloyd Blankfein, former CEO of Goldman Sachs, pointed out the strategic advantages Iran had in the strait, mentioning the ease of creating obstacles in the narrow bottleneck. Experts also highlighted Iran’s ability to deploy mines and low-cost attack drones in the region.
Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci blamed the situation on “bad war planning” and noted the redeployment of U.S. Navy minesweepers away from the strait. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil transportation, has led to casualties on both sides.
Maher criticized former Vice President Kamala Harris for her remarks about Trump dragging America into a war that the public didn’t want. He also joked about who knows more about what Americans don’t want. Meanwhile, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth controversially claimed that the strait was “open,” despite Iran asserting control over it.
Maher had previously stated that he would oppose the Iran war if Trump deployed troops there. However, recent reports indicated that 2,500 Marines were being sent to the Middle East due to escalating Iranian attacks in the strait. The situation remains tense as the U.S. grapples with securing the vital waterway.
