Billy Joel: A Journey of Triumph and Struggle
During the Tribeca premiere of the highly anticipated documentary, “Billy Joel: And So It Goes,” fans were given a raw and honest glimpse into the life of the iconic singer. In a shocking revelation, Joel opened up about a dark chapter in his past when he attempted to take his own life.
The catalyst for this heartbreaking decision was an affair Joel had with the wife of his friend and former Atilla bandmate, Jon Small. At the time, Joel was living with Small, his wife Elizabeth Weber, and their young son. Despite eventually marrying Weber, Joel carried immense guilt for the pain he had caused.
“I felt very, very guilty about it. They had a child. I felt like a homewrecker,” Joel confessed. The weight of his actions pushed him into a deep depression, culminating in thoughts of suicide. “I figured, ‘That’s it. I don’t want to live anymore.’ I was just in a lot of pain and it was sort of like, ‘Why hang out? Tomorrow is going to be just like today is and today sucks.’ So, I just thought I’d end it all,” Joel shared.
In a desperate attempt to end his suffering, Joel first overdosed on sleeping pills, slipping into a coma for days. Upon waking, he felt compelled to try again, this time consuming a bottle of “Lemon Pledge.” Thankfully, he was rushed to the hospital and survived. These failed attempts led Joel to seek help and he checked into an observation ward for several weeks, a decision he describes as “life-changing.”
Now, Joel faces a new battle with NPH, a condition affecting his hearing, eyesight, and coordination, leading to the cancellation of upcoming concerts. Concerns about his health have been raised as he experienced a frightening fall on stage during a performance in Connecticut.
Despite these challenges, Joel remains committed to his recovery. His team announced a hiatus from performing to undergo specific physical therapy and surgery. The focus is now on Joel’s well-being and ensuring he prioritizes his health above all else.
As fans rally around the legendary singer, offering support and well wishes, Joel’s resilience and determination shine through. His journey is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity and find strength in moments of darkness. Billy Joel’s story is a reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow.
