Bitcoin, Ether rebound as short liquidations hit $427 million
SHARE

Ether led a significant cryptocurrency rebound on Friday, driven by a surge in short liquidations that forced bearish traders out of their positions, as reported by Bloomberg. The price of Ether climbed by as much as 8.3% during the day, a notable intraday movement not seen since a spike three weeks prior. Bitcoin also saw an increase, although less pronounced at less than 4%. Both tokens experienced a pullback from their session highs.

Data from Coinglass, cited by Bloomberg, indicated that over $255 million in Ether short positions were closed out in the previous 24 hours, alongside $172 million in liquidated bearish wagers on Bitcoin during the same timeframe. The pace of Ether liquidations notably accelerated in the most recent hour, with approximately $188 million in total liquidations. Overall, long and short positions across the broader crypto market amounted to around $500 million in liquidations within the prior 24-hour period.

The market behavior exhibited characteristics of a short squeeze, with traders paying a premium to maintain short positions amid an 8% rally. Adam McCarthy, head of research at trading firm LO:TECH, highlighted this dynamic, stating that it exacerbated the price movement. On Binance, approximately $76 million in Ether positions were liquidated, with a majority being closed short positions. In perpetual futures markets, Ether funding rates turned negative, indicating that short sellers were being charged to uphold their exposure while long counterparties collected payments.

The rapid gains observed on Friday were primarily attributed to speculative mechanics rather than a significant influx of new buyers, according to Bloomberg. Traders had been relatively inactive since late August following a surge in Bitcoin that triggered forced deleveraging. Lacie Zhang, a research analyst at Bitget Wallet, suggested that the recent range-bound trading appeared to be a consolidation phase with waning short-term momentum rather than a structural breakdown.

The market behavior on Friday mirrored a pattern seen in late August when a surge in Bitcoin led to its strongest weekly gain in two years. This increase triggered a wave of short liquidations, with roughly $2.7 billion in crypto short positions being liquidated. The Treasury Department’s announcement of expanding its bond buyback operations for longer-dated securities played a significant role in driving yields down and attracting buyers to risk assets during that period.

Despite the recent gains, Bitcoin has yet to reach its 2026 peak of $94,820, set in mid-January, or its record high of $126,198 from October 2025. The cryptocurrency market continues to exhibit volatility and speculative trading patterns, influenced by various factors such as market sentiment, regulatory developments, and macroeconomic indicators.
