Bluesky Launches Blue Check Verification Feature

Bluesky made an exciting announcement on Monday, revealing the rollout of its highly anticipated blue check verification feature. This confirmation ended months of speculation surrounding the arrival of this new tool on the platform.

Similar to Twitter’s iconic blue checkmark (RIP), Bluesky’s blue check verification will serve to authenticate notable accounts, providing users with the assurance that they are interacting with legitimate profiles and content.

During its initial phase, Bluesky will collaborate with a select group of “Trusted Verifiers,” which are independent organizations tasked with verifying accounts within their respective teams. For instance, a company could verify its public relations team members with blue checks, offering users a clear signal of trustworthiness when accessing company-related updates.

Bluesky has emphasized that its moderation team will meticulously vet each new verification to ensure authenticity. This stringent verification process aims to maintain the platform’s integrity and credibility.

Prior to the introduction of blue check verification, Bluesky employed a form of verification that allowed users to link their account to a domain they own. For example, JS’s account is verified through the JS domain name, indicating its legitimacy and distinguishing it from potential impersonators.

For public figures such as celebrities, journalists, and politicians, this enhanced verification feature is crucial in combatting misinformation and safeguarding their online presence. According to Bluesky, over 270,000 accounts have successfully linked their Bluesky usernames to respective websites.

In a recent blog post, the Bluesky team highlighted the significance of domain handles in the verification process while acknowledging the user demand for a more prominent visual cue to identify authentic accounts.

While Bluesky is currently not accepting verification applications at launch, the platform has revealed plans to introduce a request form in the near future.
