Bluesky, a social networking platform, is rolling out updates to its app to enhance user experience. One of the key features being introduced is the ability for users to share their livestreams on Twitch directly from the Bluesky app. Additionally, Bluesky is adding specialized hashtags, known as cashtags, specifically designed for discussing publicly traded stocks.

These new features come at a crucial time for Bluesky, as the platform has seen a significant increase in new installs following a recent controversy involving deepfake technology. The incident involved users requesting Bluesky’s integrated AI bot, Grok, to create sexualized images of women and minors without their consent. This led to an investigation by California’s attorney general into xAI’s chatbot for distributing nonconsensual sexually explicit material.

In response to the surge in downloads, market intelligence provider Appfigures reported a nearly 50% increase in daily downloads of Bluesky’s iOS app in the U.S. The platform typically sees around 4,000 installs per day, but during the period from December 30, 2025, through January 14, 2026, downloads spiked to 29,000.

The introduction of cashtags on Bluesky will enable users to discuss stocks in a similar manner to popular platforms like Stocktwits and Twitter. By adding a dollar symbol before the stock ticker symbol (e.g., $AAPL for Apple), users can easily engage in stock-related conversations.

Moreover, Bluesky is expanding access to its “Live Now” feature, allowing users to display a temporary “LIVE” badge on their avatar when streaming on platforms like Twitch. While the feature currently supports Twitch only, Bluesky aims to enhance the user experience by providing real-time updates on livestream activities.

Despite facing declines in downloads and usage last year, Bluesky’s recent updates and features are attracting new users and re-engaging existing ones. The platform’s efforts to innovate and improve user experience demonstrate its commitment to staying competitive in the social networking space.

In conclusion, Bluesky’s strategic updates and new features are aimed at enhancing user engagement and attracting a wider audience. By continuously evolving and adapting to user needs, Bluesky is positioning itself as a leading social networking platform in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
