Bluesky Cracks Down on User Violations

Bluesky is taking a firm stance on enforcing its moderation policies to foster healthier conversations among its users. The social media company recently announced updates to its community guidelines following feedback from over 14,000 community members. The changes aim to address concerns about maintaining a space for creative expression and marginalized voices.

According to a new blog post, Bluesky is shifting its focus towards promoting constructive dialogue and cracking down on harassment and toxic content. As part of these efforts, the company will escalate enforcement actions, leading to quicker account restrictions for violators. Users can expect fewer warnings before facing deactivation, and clearer guidelines on what content is prohibited.

Bluesky’s move towards stricter enforcement has sparked debate over who gets banned and why. Past incidents, such as the suspension of accounts fundraising for Palestinians in Gaza or the temporary ban of horror writer Gretchen Felker-Martin, have drawn criticism from users and public figures.

Despite facing backlash from both left-leaning and right-leaning users, Bluesky remains committed to enhancing user experience. The company plans to introduce product changes like a “zen mode” for a calmer social media experience and prompts for engaging in more constructive conversations.

Additionally, Bluesky has revised its guidelines based on user feedback, with specific language on protected expression like journalism and education. Recent changes prohibiting sexual content involving non-consensual activity, even if animated or illustrated, have sparked controversy among users.

While some users have criticized Bluesky’s communication around these changes, a company spokesperson clarified that there have been no alterations to enforcement in this area. Bluesky remains steadfast in its mission to cultivate a safe and inclusive online community.
