Authorities at Rocky Mountain National Park discovered the remains of a 66-year-old woman from Fort Collins who had been reported missing after a hiking trip.

The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reported missing on Tuesday night when she failed to return from her day hike. Her body was located near Chasm Lake on the south side of the lake in a scree slope early Wednesday morning.

It is believed that she fell in the rocky terrain of the area. Chasm Lake, located not far below Long’s Peak, which is the highest point in the park, sits at an altitude of 11,760 feet.

The Rocky Mountain National Park Search and Rescue team, with assistance from the Mesa Verde Interagency Helitak crew, recovered the woman’s body. She was airlifted via a long line operation to the Upper Beaver Meadows helipad, where she was then transferred to the Boulder County Coroner’s office.

The woman’s identity will be released by the coroner’s office once her family has been notified.
