In a recent interview with Decrypt, Superstate founder and CEO Robert Leshner emphasized the importance of tokenizing assets like cars and houses to drive user interest in tokenization. Leshner believes that tokenizing physical assets on a blockchain would not only increase awareness but also accelerate adoption, especially when applied to stocks.
Leshner envisions a future where investors can self-custody their stocks, bring them to decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, borrow against them, and even use the borrowed funds to purchase real-world assets like cars and houses. This level of flexibility and control over assets is expected to make investors very happy.
Tokenization involves converting real-world assets such as U.S. treasuries, stocks, or gold into digital tokens on a blockchain. While the underlying asset remains unchanged, tokenization enables faster transactions and programmability through smart contracts. Successful examples of tokenized assets include BlackRock’s iShares BUIDL fund, Franklin Templeton’s BENJI fund, and Ondo’s OUSG and USDY products, which collectively manage billions of dollars.
Leshner, who first made waves in the crypto industry in 2017 with the founding of Compound Labs, has shifted his focus to Superstate, a company dedicated to facilitating the movement of traditional financial assets onto the blockchain through tokenization. Superstate recently assisted in tokenizing shares of Nasdaq-traded companies like Solana and Galaxy Digital on its Opening Bell platform.
One of the key advantages of tokenization highlighted by Leshner is the ability to use financing in new and innovative ways, breaking free from the constraints of traditional broker dealers. Additionally, portability of assets is another exciting but underexplored use case of tokenization. While existing systems for transferring shares between firms are cumbersome, tokenization offers a more seamless and efficient solution.
Overall, Leshner’s vision for tokenization extends beyond just digitizing assets—it aims to revolutionize the way investors interact with and utilize their assets. With the potential for increased liquidity, accessibility, and control, tokenization represents a promising future for the financial industry.
