A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with a series of robberies targeting CTA passengers along the Red Line in Chicago. The Chicago Police Department released a community alert on November 29, detailing the robberies which involved between two to seven suspects in each incident. The robberies took place on board train cars, with many victims being physically assaulted during the crimes.
The boy, who was arrested on Thursday, is believed to have been involved in at least seven of these robberies. On November 13, he was part of a group that robbed a 21-year-old man near the Argyle station and a 44-year-old man near Granville. Surveillance images of two suspects from the Granville robbery were released by the police.
In addition to these incidents, the boy is accused of robbing a 22-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman near Bryn Mawr on November 16, a 31-year-old man near Thorndale on November 24, a 32-year-old man near Thorndale on November 24, a 36-year-old man near Argyle on November 27, and a 56-year-old woman near Bryn Mawr on November 17.
The arrest took place at the Bryn Mawr station on Thursday morning. The boy is facing charges that include four counts of robbery, two counts of attempted robbery, one count of armed robbery, one count of aggravated robbery, and four counts of aggravated battery of a transit passenger. Due to his age, no further information about the boy has been disclosed.
This series of robberies has raised concerns among CTA passengers and the community at large. The swift action by the Chicago Police Department in apprehending the suspect is a step towards ensuring the safety and security of public transportation users.
