In a distressing turn of events, a 16-year-old boy was shot and injured in the Bronx late Sunday evening, just over an hour after a separate shooting incident occurred in Queens, involving a teenager who was gunned down by assailants on a moped, police reported.

The shooting took place shortly before 9 p.m. at the intersection of Bergen and Brook avenues in the Melrose neighborhood. This area is characterized by a blend of residential and commercial buildings, with notable establishments like Aldi and Walgreens nearby. According to police, the victim, who is reported to have no prior arrests, sustained a gunshot wound to the right thigh and was promptly transported to Lincoln Medical Center, where he is currently in stable condition.

Details surrounding the shooting remain murky, as the victim has been uncooperative with the authorities, making it challenging for police to provide a description of the assailant. At this time, the motive behind the attack is still under investigation.

Earlier that very evening, a 19-year-old named Jean Rios was shot in the chest at 64th Road and Grand Central Parkway in Forest Hills, Queens. He was rushed to NewYork Presbyterian-Queens Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

In this case, three suspects dressed in red fled the scene on a moped following the fatal shooting. The authorities have yet to ascertain a motive for this incident; however, sources have indicated that the victim had a previous arrest record tied to drug-related charges.

These violent occurrences in New York City follow a tragic pattern, with the city still reeling from a recent shooting that claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy outside a Dunkin’ Donuts in Queens. This incident prompted a visit from Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, who expressed her concerns over the rising gun violence among youth.

“There were two teenage kids that were killed within a week here in Queens County,” Katz stated in an interview. “I felt it was important to respond to both scenes. We want to keep guns out of the hands of teenagers.”

The District Attorney emphasized the significance of these crime scenes, indicating that her office is committed to monitoring critical investigations. “These are major crime scenes. We go to them to ensure I have eyes on those I can,” she added.

<pThe earlier shooting that shocked the community involved 13-year-old Sanjay Samuel, who was fatally shot in the head during a group altercation that could potentially be linked to gang activity. The alleged perpetrator, 16-year-old Jaysohn Sykes, has been arrested and is facing charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, which could result in a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.

According to a recent report by Mayor Eric Adams, youth crime in New York City has surged over the past year despite an overall decline in crime rates across the city, a worrying trend attributed to the state’s controversial “Raise the Age Law.”
