An 11-year-old boy tragically passed away, and his two siblings are currently in critical condition after their mother allegedly fed them liquid methadone in Malaysia. Selangor Police confirmed the heartbreaking incident on Wednesday, February 11, revealing that the three children were rushed to Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin Hospital in Kajang after falling ill.
The police received a distressing call from the medical officer at the hospital around 9 a.m., prompting immediate action. Unfortunately, the 11-year-old boy did not survive, while his 5-year-old and 9-year-old brothers are fighting for their lives in the hospital. The boys were admitted to the hospital early in the morning on February 11, according to reports from The Straits Times.
The younger siblings are currently in critical condition and receiving intensive care treatment in the hospital. Selangor Police Chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar disclosed that a 35-year-old female suspect has been apprehended in Kajang for allegedly administering methadone to the children. The victims were reportedly fed the dangerous substance at a residence in Sungai Ramal Buru, leading to this devastating outcome.
Both parents of the children have been detained in connection to the crime, as the investigation unfolds to determine the motives behind this heinous act. The suspects’ identities have not been disclosed, and it is unclear if they have sought legal representation following their arrests. The authorities are diligently working to piece together the events that led to the children being exposed to methadone.
Methadone, a long-acting opioid agonist medication used in treating opioid use disorder, can have severe side effects if not administered under proper medical supervision. Common side effects include restlessness, nausea, slow breathing, itchiness, sweating, constipation, and sexual problems. However, serious side effects like difficulty breathing, hives, chest pain, and hallucinations can occur, emphasizing the importance of responsible usage.
It is crucial to note that methadone should only be taken as prescribed by a healthcare professional, as misuse or overdose can lead to life-threatening complications. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration stresses the significance of obtaining methadone from certified opioid treatment programs to ensure safe and effective usage.
As the investigation progresses, our thoughts and prayers are with the affected children and their families during this difficult time. The authorities are working tirelessly to bring justice to the victims and shed light on this heartbreaking incident.
