Boy George’s upcoming tour of New Zealand may face hurdles due to his previous convictions, which immigration authorities will take into consideration before granting him a visa. The British singer, known for hits like “Karma Chameleon” and “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?”, was sentenced to 15 months in jail in 2009 for assault and false imprisonment of a male escort. This history of convictions could potentially impact his ability to obtain a visa for New Zealand.

The Timeless Summer tour, where Boy George is set to headline, is scheduled for January next year with performances in Christchurch, Napier, New Plymouth, Mount Maunganui, and Auckland. Despite his popularity as a musician, his criminal record poses a challenge for his entry into the country.

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) stated that artists from visa-waiver countries participating in approved festivals can usually travel to New Zealand without a visa, provided they obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) beforehand. However, individuals with serious character issues, such as previous convictions, may face visa denials. INZ emphasized the importance of assessing Boy George’s character and situation before making a decision on his visa application.

While the tour management remains optimistic about the situation, they understand the need to adhere to immigration regulations. INZ will be in contact with the tour promoter to ensure they are aware of the requirements regarding Boy George’s visa application.

It is essential for all applicants to meet the visa requirements, which include demonstrating good character. INZ typically does not grant visas to individuals with a prison sentence of five years or more, or those previously excluded or deported from any country. Boy George’s case, with a conviction dating back over a decade, falls within a grey area that will require thorough evaluation by immigration authorities.

The Timeless Summer Tour promises an exciting lineup with Boy George headlining alongside artists like Little River Band, Bonnie Tyler, and Starship featuring Mickey Thomas. With performances in multiple cities across New Zealand, the tour is anticipated to be a memorable experience for music fans.
