The police have identified the two boys who tragically lost their lives when a riverbank collapsed in Kawerau last week.

The victims were 11-year-old Luti Maui Mafi and 10-year-old Paul Mason Lloyd.

According to the police, the boys were part of a group of children who were playing and fishing on the bank of the Tarawera River when it gave way, trapping them last Thursday.

“Two police officers arrived and immediately swam across the river, trying to find and rescue the boys using their bare hands,” a police statement revealed.

“They were quickly joined by volunteer fire brigade members who descended the cliff with equipment to assist.”

Despite their valiant efforts, the boys were discovered deceased.

Inspector Phil Gillbanks stated that both police and fire brigade personnel made every effort under perilous conditions to save the boys.

“This incident is profoundly tragic and heartbreaking, and our thoughts are with the families,” he said.

A local rafting operator who attempted to assist in the rescue noted that the area is a well-known swimming spot for children.

Kawerau Mayor Faylene Tunui expressed condolences to the families, describing the tragedy as every family’s worst nightmare.

Local kaumatua have conducted karakia, and a rahui has been instituted on the Tarawera River.

The police stated that the case will be referred to the Coroner.
