A daring thief managed to snag approximately $1.5 million worth of jewelry from a Macy’s store in Downtown Brooklyn, only to abandon the stolen loot when confronted by a vigilant worker wielding a stick. The brazen burglar stuffed over 700 assorted jewelry items, including gold taken from registers, into two suitcases that he had also stolen from the store.

The thief reportedly gained entry to the department store while it was still open and made his way to the basement to grab the suitcases before filling them up in the jewelry section. He then attempted to lay low until closing time, but was discovered by a watchful employee who spotted him hiding behind a wall on the store’s cameras.

When the thief tried to make a quick exit through a side entrance with the valuable loot, the employee intervened, brandishing a stick and giving chase. Startled, the thief dropped the suitcases on the sidewalk and fled the scene, leaving behind the stolen jewelry.

Upon inspecting the contents of the suitcases, the worker was astonished to find chains, rings, necklaces, bracelets, and other valuable items worth an estimated $1.5 million. Despite the initial shock of the heist, all of the stolen items were eventually recovered, and no one was harmed during the incident.

The NYPD is currently on the lookout for the suspect, described as wearing a black Nike ski cap, a black mask, a black leather jacket, black pants, black shoes, gray and black snow gloves, and a yellow construction vest in one photo released by police.

The Macy’s store where the theft took place is slated to close down later this year after being sold to a group of New York real estate investors for $23 million. Plans are in the works to potentially convert the 440,000-square-foot property into family-friendly attractions with possible tenants like Netflix, Universal, and Lego.

Anyone with information on the elusive thief is urged to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or visit the Crime Stoppers website to submit tips anonymously. The public’s assistance is crucial in apprehending the culprit and ensuring justice is served in this brazen jewelry heist.
