João Roni, a well-known Brazilian producer who previously worked on the hit family drama “My Penguin Friend” starring Jean Reno, has now launched Marea Cine, a new player in the industry. With a robust slate of 19 projects, all aimed at international co-productions, Roni is making a mark at Content Americas.
The launch of Marea Cine signifies the final stage of a strategic restructuring that began in 2025 when Spain’s Twentyfourseven acquired the Ocean Films brand and its advertising service department. As a founding partner of Ocean Films, Roni decided to spin off the content division he had overseen for 15 years to establish Marea Cine.
According to the company’s statement, the move represents a new beginning for Marea Cine, focusing on creating engaging content in line with the evolving preferences of global audiences. Roni expressed his excitement for this new chapter, stating, “Our focus remains on winning over global audiences and partnerships that favor the best artistic results.”
Among the 19 projects in development, 11 are international co-productions involving partners from various countries such as Italy, Argentina, Uruguay, Canada, Spain, Chile, and France. One standout project is the feature film “Dot,” inspired by the true story of American nun Dorothy Stang, set in the Amazon in 2005. Additionally, a limited series titled “Lot 55” based on the same tragedy is also in the works.
Marea Cine is collaborating with Los Angeles-based FJ Productions on the film “Dot,” with David Schurmann set to direct. Another project in the pipeline is the series “Brigitte Montfort: Blood on the Tropics” Season 1, based on a popular pulp fiction series from Brazil set in the 1960s during the Cold War.
Roni’s impressive resume includes projects like “Little Secret,” which represented Brazil at the 89th Academy Awards, and series such as “Transamazônica – A Road to the Past” and “At This Moment, at the Nation’s Sky,” which received critical acclaim at various festivals.
With a keen focus on international collaborations and a commitment to creating impactful content, Marea Cine is poised to make a significant mark in the industry under João Roni’s leadership. Fans of Roni’s work can expect more exciting projects in the future as he continues to build strong partnerships with leading companies like Netflix, TV Globo, HBO, and others.
