On Saturday, a federal judge impeded President Trump’s plans to deploy the National Guard to Portland, issuing a significant block to the president’s controversial order.
Judge Karin Immergut, appointed by Trump himself, issued a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) that criticized the decision to send troops, arguing it could potentially incite a constitutional crisis.

Last weekend, President Trump had authorized the deployment of troops to Portland and other cities with Democratic leadership, citing the need to safeguard ICE agents from what he described as terrorist threats posed by Antifa and other radical left groups.
“At the request of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to deploy necessary forces to protect the war-torn Portland and our beleaguered ICE facilities from assaults by Antifa and other domestic actors. I am also prepared to authorize Full Force, should the situation demand it. Thank you for your attention!”
In response, the state of Oregon promptly filed a lawsuit to halt the troop deployment.
Oregon’s Democratic Governor, Tina Kotek, firmly opposed Trump’s initiative, publicly instructing the President to “stand down” and keep federal forces out, despite ongoing unrest caused by leftist demonstrators in the city.
The TRO is set to lapse in 14 days, adding a layer of urgency to the unfolding legal drama.
CNN reported:
A federal judge in Oregon has granted a temporary restraining order, putting a stop to the Trump administration’s plans to deploy the National Guard in Portland in the wake of the president’s announcement to intervene in what he termed a “war-ravaged” city.
This ruling from the Trump-nominated judge presents yet another hurdle for the administration’s efforts to impose federal authority over cities governed by Democrats, often justifying such actions by claiming a rise in crime and disorder, particularly around ICE facilities amidst protests.
The temporary restraining order is in effect until October 18, as penned by U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut.
Meanwhile, the tumultuous scenes in Portland continued, as Antifa protesters took to the streets once more on Saturday, further complicating an already charged political environment.
