Senator Van Hollen’s Controversial Meeting in El Salvador
On Thursday, Maryland’s Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen made headlines during his visit to El Salvador, where he met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia—an individual recently deported from the United States. This meeting stirred considerable debate, particularly given Abrego Garcia’s background as an alleged wife-beater and a member of the notorious MS-13 gang.
During this trip, Van Hollen aimed to meet Abrego Garcia, who is currently incarcerated at the Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) after being deported by the Trump administration. Earlier attempts by Van Hollen to connect with Abrego Garcia had been unsuccessful.
Abrego Garcia had lived in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., after unlawfully entering the U.S. over ten years ago. An immigration court, along with an appeals court, identified him as a member of MS-13. His recent deportation occurred despite a court order that had previously barred his return to El Salvador. This situation is a direct consequence of the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation policy aimed at Central and South American gang members, which classified such groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs), thereby nullifying previous legal barriers.
In a personal twist, Abrego Garcia shares a child with Jennifer Vasquez Sura, an American citizen who has accused him of domestic abuse in court documents.
Adding a layer of intrigue, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele shared images of Van Hollen and Abrego Garcia, sarcastically commenting on their meeting by referring to Abrego Garcia’s supposed miraculous recovery from “death camps” and “torture,” and jokingly suggesting they were enjoying margaritas in the “tropical paradise” of El Salvador.

In response, Van Hollen tweeted about the importance of his visit, stating, “I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.”

In a further twist, Bukele remarked, “Now that he’s been confirmed healthy, he gets the honor of staying in El Salvador’s custody,” which adds a sardonic note to the unfolding drama.
