Sierra, a Fast-Growing Startup in the AI Customer Service Industry

Sierra, a 21-month-old startup based in San Francisco, recently made headlines by announcing that it has reached a significant milestone of $100 million in annual revenue run rate (ARR). Founded by former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor and Google alum Clay Bavor, Sierra specializes in building AI agents for customer service, catering to enterprises across various industries.

The rapid growth of Sierra has taken even its seasoned co-founders by surprise. Taylor and Bavor expressed their astonishment on their blog, stating, “That’s a heck of a lot quicker than we expected.” The company’s success signifies a growing trend of businesses embracing AI agents for customer service tasks.

Sierra’s impressive roster of clients includes tech giants like Deliveroo, Discord, and SoFi, as well as established companies outside the tech sector such as ADT, Vans, and SiriusXM. What sets Sierra apart is its ability to create AI agents capable of handling a wide range of tasks, from processing returns to assisting with mortgage applications.

While facing competition from other startups in the AI customer service space, Sierra claims to be the leader in this category. The company’s valuation of $10 billion, based on its $100 million ARR, reflects its significant growth trajectory and market dominance.

One key factor that sets Sierra apart is its outcomes-based pricing model, where customers are charged for completed work rather than traditional subscription fees. This approach has resonated well with businesses looking for cost-effective and efficient customer service solutions.

Taylor and Bavor’s partnership dates back to their time at Google in the mid-2000s. Taylor, a Stanford computer science graduate, has a proven track record in tech innovation, having co-created Google Maps and founded successful startups like FriendFeed and Quip. Bavor, with his extensive experience at Google leading products like Gmail and Google Drive, brings a wealth of expertise to Sierra.
