The crime-comedy caper “Deep Cover” brought together a talented trio of actors – Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed – who shared their experiences of filming the movie during a post-screening Q&A at the world premiere at SXSW London. Directed by Tom Kingsley and produced by Colin Trevorrow, the film follows three improv actors who are recruited by an undercover cop to infiltrate London’s criminal underworld by posing as dangerous gangsters.
Trevorrow revealed that the idea for “Deep Cover” originated in 2010 when he and co-writer Derek Connolly heard about New York City police using actors as decoys. The script, written by Connolly and Trevorrow, was set in London by British improv duo Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen.
Director Kingsley explained how the project evolved from a comedy to include bigger stars and more elaborate action sequences. The on-screen chemistry between the leads was attributed to their genuine connection and shared life experiences, according to Howard. Bloom, known for his dramatic roles, found new comedic territory in the film, while Mohammed, with his comedy background, embraced the challenge of action sequences.
The film was produced independently in London, with Amazon’s distribution partnership and the dedication of the British film crew making the ambitious project possible within a competitive budget. Authentic London locations were crucial in grounding the comedy in reality, with the director emphasizing the importance of filming in real locations rather than studio sets.
Despite being a film about improvisation, the production heavily relied on the script, with improvisation occurring on set but not all making the final cut. Howard praised the collaborative process, highlighting the organic and collaborative nature of the filmmaking experience.
Trevorrow reflected on the rarity of comedy in theaters, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to showcase the film at SXSW London before its streaming release on Amazon. The cast also includes British icons Paddy Considine, Ian McShane, and Sean Bean.
Overall, “Deep Cover” promises to be a unique and entertaining addition to the comedy genre, blending action, humor, and genuine friendship among its talented cast.
