Former Florida Governor Buddy MacKay, who served briefly in office after the sudden death of Governor Lawton Chiles, has passed away at the age of 91. MacKay, a Democrat, was known for his dedication to Florida’s environment and advocacy for minorities throughout his political career.

MacKay’s son, Ken MacKay, shared that his father passed away peacefully at home in Ocklawaha, Florida, after taking a nap and not waking up. His children were by his side at the time of his passing, reflecting on his legacy as a public servant.

Governor Ron DeSantis and former Governor Jeb Bush both expressed their condolences for MacKay’s family, recognizing his service to the state with honor and distinction. MacKay, who served as Chiles’ lieutenant governor for two terms, stepped into the role of governor for a brief period after Chiles’ passing in 1998.

During his time as governor, MacKay focused on overseeing the transition to Jeb Bush’s administration, acknowledging the importance of a smooth transfer of power. Despite his defeat by Bush in the 1998 gubernatorial election, MacKay was respected for his commitment to his role as caretaker of the state during a challenging time.

Throughout his political career, MacKay served in various roles, including the Florida Legislature, U.S. House of Representatives, and as a special envoy to Latin America for President Bill Clinton. Despite facing defeat in statewide elections, MacKay maintained a sense of humor and continued to advocate for important issues.

MacKay’s views on race and integration evolved during his time in the U.S. Air Force, leading him to become a staunch advocate for equality and desegregation. His upbringing in the segregated South shaped his perspective on social issues and influenced his approach to governance.
