DOT Approved Windmill Projects Near Highways and Railroads Despite Safety Concerns

WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation, under former Secretary Pete Buttigieg, ignored safety concerns to greenlight numerous windmill projects near America’s highways and railroads, even though potential hazards were acknowledged, according to sources at The Post.

Despite at least 33 safety recommendations to keep wind turbines clear of critical infrastructure being overruled between 2023 and 2024, the projects were allowed to proceed, posing a risk of interference with essential radio communications.

In one instance in March 2023, the National Telecommunications Information Administration cautioned an Illinois wind farm about potential issues with train communications due to turbine locations being too close to railway lines.

The Heritage Prairie Wind Energy Project faced scrutiny for potential risks to train communications, but the concerns were later withdrawn without explanation.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has initiated a review of wind farms near transportation infrastructure, criticizing Buttigieg and former President Joe Biden for prioritizing green energy goals over safety.

Reps for Biden and Buttigieg have not responded to requests for comment.

The new regulations will require a minimum distance of 1.2 miles between wind farms and railways or highways to prevent interference with radio signals crucial for transportation systems.

“Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg put climate religion ahead of safety — blatantly ignoring engineers who warned of the danger of constructing wind turbines near railroads and highways,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said. AP

The Federal Aviation Administration will also investigate potential impacts on US airspace, as mentioned in the Commerce Department’s letter.

While the DOT’s Office of Transportation for Research and Technology supported the wind projects, concerns have been raised about the lack of safety recommendations for some projects.

Last week, it was reported that the Transportation Department under Buttigieg approved over $80 billion in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, prompting criticism from Secretary Duffy for neglecting safety concerns.

In an interview with NPR, Buttigieg defended his regulatory approach, emphasizing the importance of safety in aviation.

In conclusion, the approval of windmill projects near critical infrastructure highlights the delicate balance between green energy objectives and safety considerations in transportation planning.
