Jewish Leaders in Bay Area Condemn Mayor Martinez’s Antisemitic Posts
Leaders and groups within California’s Bay Area are denouncing Richmond Mayor Eduardo Martinez for sharing antisemitic conspiracies online. Martinez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has faced calls for resignation after amplifying posts that blamed Israel for rising antisemitism and labeled a terror attack as a “false flag” operation.
Despite deleting the posts and apologizing, critics argue that Martinez’s response was insufficient in addressing the harm caused. Sam Yebri, a former Los Angeles City Council candidate, emphasized the dangerous consequences of sharing hateful rhetoric.
Rabbi Dean Kertesz, a respected figure in the Jewish community, condemned Martinez’s actions as blatant hatred towards Jews. He expressed anger at the situation, highlighting the difference between legitimate criticism of Israeli policy and malicious attacks on Jews.
The concerns over rising antisemitism have led to the formation of a new political advocacy organization in the Bay Area. This group aims to lobby lawmakers, pressure for change, and advocate for the shared values of the Jewish community.
Jonathan Mintzer, the organization’s director, warned that antisemitism is no longer hidden but is now surfacing in mainstream politics. He criticized Martinez’s response as a failure of accountability and urged for a genuine apology that acknowledges the harm caused by such rhetoric.
Jeremy Russell from the Bay Area Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) highlighted the city council’s involvement in the Israel-Hamas conflict, leading to a sense of unease among Jewish residents. The JCRC has called for Martinez’s resignation, citing a pattern of behavior that goes beyond a single mistake.
As the controversy surrounding Martinez continues, concerns about his judgment and awareness persist. The DSA’s anti-Israel positions have also come under scrutiny, with calls for Martinez to resign from public office.
