Robert Garza, a security analyst at Campbell Soup Company, found himself in a harrowing situation during what he thought was a routine salary discussion with his superior, Martin Bally. Instead of discussing compensation, Garza was subjected to a disturbing hour-long tirade that left him feeling sick to his stomach.

In a lawsuit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court, Garza detailed the shocking encounter where Bally went on a racist rant disparaging Indian coworkers and making derogatory remarks about the company’s products and customers. The recording captured Bally’s offensive comments, including calling Indian employees “idiots” and making disparaging remarks about Campbell’s products.

Despite feeling disgusted after the meeting, Garza initially kept the recording to himself. However, in January 2025, he decided to report Bally’s behavior to his supervisor, J.D. Aupperle, particularly highlighting the racist comments. Just twenty days later, Garza was unjustly fired from his position.

The termination came as a shock to Garza, especially since Bally had praised his performance during the same meeting in December. According to Garza’s attorney, he had never faced any disciplinary action before being fired without any explanation or follow-up from Human Resources.

Garza’s lawsuit accuses Campbell Soup Company of fostering a racially hostile work environment and retaliating against him for speaking up. Despite the company’s statement denouncing Bally’s comments and promising an investigation, Garza feels let down by Campbell’s handling of the situation.

The ordeal has taken a toll on Garza, who struggled to find another job for ten months after his termination. He hopes that by standing up against workplace misconduct, he can bring attention to the injustices he faced at Campbell’s.

For those facing similar situations, it is essential to document everything, report through proper channels, know your rights, consult an employment attorney, and consider outside agencies like the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Garza’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of speaking out against discrimination and harassment in the workplace.
