Cancer cases shifting to younger people and women, report finds
The American Cancer Society reported that deaths from cancer are continuing to decline in the United States, which is a positive trend. However, within this overall improvement, there is a concerning shift in the cancer burden from older to younger adults and from men to women.
From 1991 to 2022, the cancer mortality rate has decreased by 34%, resulting in approximately 4.5 million fewer deaths. This progress is attributed to factors such as reduced smoking rates, advancements in treatment, and earlier detection methods. Despite these advancements, there is a worrying increase in cancer incidence rates, particularly among women and younger adults.
One striking trend is the rise in cancer rates among women aged 50 to 64, surpassing rates in men of the same age group. Additionally, there has been a significant increase in cancer rates among younger age groups, challenging the common perception that cancer is primarily a disease of aging. For instance, lung cancer incidence rates are now higher in women under 65 than in men of the same age group.
Colorectal cancer cases among individuals under 45 have been increasing, along with new diagnoses of cervical cancer in women under 45. Furthermore, death rates for cancers of the oral cavity and pancreas are on the rise in both men and women. Women are experiencing higher death rates for uterine corpus (endometrial) and liver cancers as well.
Pancreatic cancer is particularly concerning, as both its incidence and mortality rates are increasing. With a five-year survival rate of only 8% for those diagnosed with pancreatic exocrine tumors, there is an urgent need for more effective therapies and early detection methods.
The report also highlights rising incidence rates for breast, liver, and melanoma cancers in women, prostate cancer in men, and HPV-related oral cancers in both men and women. Experts suggest that lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and the prevalence of obesity may contribute to these trends, emphasizing the importance of early screening and preventive measures.
Despite improvements in childhood cancer outcomes, there is still a rise in cancer incidence among adolescents aged 15 to 19. Health equity remains a significant issue, with Native American and Black populations experiencing higher cancer mortality rates compared to white individuals.
As the nation celebrates the declining cancer mortality rates, there is a call for continued investment in cancer research and policies that ensure access to care for all populations. The report predicts over 2 million new cancer diagnoses and more than 600,000 cancer deaths in the U.S. in 2025.
While the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted cancer-related data, the report underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to address cancer disparities and improve outcomes for all individuals.
