Cannes:
Authorities in France are currently investigating a possible arson attack as the main cause of a power outage that affected the Alpes-Maritimes region in southern France, including the city of Cannes, which is currently hosting its prestigious annual film festival.
A spokesperson for the French national gendarmerie stated, “We are looking into the possibility of a deliberate fire being started,” noting that no arrests have been made at this time.
Earlier on Saturday, the local authorities in the Alpes-Maritimes region announced a major electricity outage in the western part of the area, including Cannes. RTE France is working to restore power.
The Cannes Film Festival confirmed that the closing ceremony would proceed as planned on Saturday evening. “The Palais des Festivals has switched to an independent power supply, ensuring that all scheduled events and screenings, including the Closing Ceremony, will continue as scheduled and under normal conditions,” the festival organizers said in a statement.
