In a shocking turn of events, a Santa Monica mom, Carmen Anita Degregg, was accused of brutally murdering her 15-month-old daughter with a frying pan. The gruesome crime took place inside her upscale Santa Monica apartment complex, where studio apartments start at $3,200 per month.
Degregg, a former star high-school wrestler, appeared dazed in court as she pleaded not guilty to the charges of murder and felony assault of a child under 8 causing death. Her public defender, Ivonne De La Cruz, quickly entered the not guilty plea on her behalf. The judge set a preliminary hearing date for April 23, to which Degregg quietly responded with a single word, “Yes.”
The mother’s arrest came under bizarre circumstances when she approached police officers on the UCLA campus and confessed to harming her child. The officers found the toddler severely injured in the apartment, and despite being rushed to the hospital, she was pronounced dead.
De La Cruz requested that Degregg not be photographed in court, citing concerns about tainting a potential jury pool. However, the judge denied the request and kept Degregg’s bail at $2 million. If convicted, she faces 25 years to life in prison for the heinous crime.
LA District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed the office’s commitment to seeking maximum accountability in cases where parents are accused of causing a child’s death. The tragic incident has left the community in shock and disbelief, as they grapple with the senseless loss of a young life at the hands of a parent.
As the case unfolds, the focus remains on seeking justice for the innocent victim and ensuring that Degregg is held accountable for her actions. The upcoming court proceedings will shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident and provide closure to those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
