Carmen Maria Machado, known for her well-received short story collection Her Body and Other Parties and the memoir In the Dream House, is a Cuban-American writer who originally studied photography in college. She has frequently collaborated with visual artists. Today, she shares insights with Associate Editor Lakshmi Rivera Amin about her role as a guest curator for painter Rocío García’s exhibit at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art. Machado hopes the exhibition will encourage reflection on both state power and interpersonal power dynamics.

In other news, the New Museum will host a major survey of Arthur Jafa’s work, a significant Indigenous art acquisition is underway in Phoenix, and the latest edition of Beer With a Painter features Palestinian-American artist Samia Halaby.

This weekend, I’ll be speaking at Legacy Lab New Mexico at the Albuquerque Museum on a topic important to us at Hyperallergic—how artists can make a lasting impact. If you’re attending, I look forward to meeting you.

What Carmen Maria Machado Wants You to Know About Power

For The Object of Power is Power, a title inspired by George Orwell’s 1984, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art in Soho has enlisted author Carmen Maria Machado to work with Head Curator Stamatina Gregory on a solo exhibition featuring paintings by Cuban artist Rocío García.

As I wandered through the shadowy gallery, it was clear that Machado had found a kindred spirit in García. Her large-scale canvases tell their own stories, exploring the same themes of sexuality and power that Machado has long examined in her writing. | Lakshmi Rivera Amin

(1) ‘ethical AI’ 😂 (2) ‘In reality, it has more in common with our theme parks like Disneyland, with their meticulous crafting of “experience.”’ well said! & also related to the theme-parkization of art one sees ( here in the UK & I guess in the US too) in those horrible ‘immersive’ Van Gogh &c. money spinners …(3) ‘It was exhilarating. It was mesmerizing. I felt like I was going to be sick.’ Nice comic timing!
