In a shocking revelation, a Colorado Bureau of Investigation agent was caught using a racist slur during a phone call in February while on duty in his patrol car. Despite an internal investigation into the incident, Agent Douglas Pearson managed to keep his job.

The derogatory term was used during a personal conversation with a woman on the phone, where Pearson made the offensive remark in response to a news story about a mass shooting in Kansas City. The woman did not react to the slur, and Pearson, unaware that he was recording the call on his body-worn camera, continued the conversation.

The unintended recording, which lasted 37 minutes, was later reviewed by Pearson’s supervisor, leading to an investigation that found him in violation of CBI policy for ethics and professional conduct. While disciplinary actions were recommended, the specific consequences faced by Pearson remain undisclosed due to state personnel rules.

It was also revealed that Pearson has a close personal relationship with CBI Director Chris Schaefer. However, Schaefer was not involved in the investigation. In response to the incident, Schaefer emphasized the importance of respect and integrity within the organization.

Pearson, a former Aurora police officer with 11 years of experience, joined the CBI in 2022 and has since been reassigned to a desk job. His racist comment prompted three Colorado district attorney’s offices to issue warnings to defense attorneys about his credibility as a witness in court.

Despite the controversy surrounding Pearson, the CBI continues to uphold its commitment to respect and professionalism in all aspects of its operations.
