A CBS News Chicago reporter and photographer were assaulted on Monday afternoon near the Adler Planetarium as they were preparing for a live broadcast, according to reports from the station and Chicago police.
The event took place around 4:25 p.m. on the 900 block of East Solidarity Drive, close to the Adler Planetarium, as confirmed by Chicago Police to Fox News Digital.
Several men reportedly arrived in a truck, exited the vehicle, and rushed toward the victims while shouting racial slurs at one of the journalists, according to police statements.
The suspects commanded a dog to attack the journalists, but when the animal did not comply, they began to damage the journalists’ equipment, police said.
One suspect reportedly smashed the photographerâs camera, while another damaged the windshield of the news truck, as reported by the outlet.
The two journalists managed to escape the incident without any injuries.
Police informed Fox News Digital, âTwo male victims, while standing on the sidewalk, were approached by multiple unknown male offenders who exited a white truck.â
They added, âOne of the offenders directed a dog to attack a 54-year-old male victim while yelling slurs. When the dog did not attack, the male offender became irate and damaged the victimâs property by throwing it on the ground. All the offenders re-entered the white truck and fled the scene in an unknown direction. There are no injuries reported.â
Following a police chase, authorities arrested several individuals in Brighton Park. The incident reportedly included a gun being pointed at another person.
A CBS spokesperson stated, âWe are shocked and horrified by this crime, and we are grateful that our journalists are safe.â
The case is still under investigation.
