The CBS Evening News is undergoing behind-the-scenes changes once again, with the departure of No. 2 producer Javier Guzman following Wednesday night’s broadcast. This shakeup comes amidst new anchor Tony Dokoupil’s rocky first week at the helm of the newscast.

Despite Guzman’s exit, executive producer Kim Harvey remains in her role on the show. The transition to Dokoupil as anchor was a significant move orchestrated by CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, resulting in a week filled with headlines and challenges.

The week kicked off with plans for Dokoupil to embark on a week-long broadcast tour being scrapped due to the U.S. invasion of Venezuela. This led to Dokoupil launching his tenure early, with a three-segment interview with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Saturday.

Dokoupil’s official debut on Monday was marred by technical difficulties, as he struggled to navigate a segment mix-up with evident frustration. The following day, Dokoupil faced criticism for an unconventional sign-off that paid tribute to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a move seen as tone deaf given the current global unrest.

While Guzman’s departure is said to be unrelated to these incidents, it coincides with the restructuring of the newscast. Guzman had recently taken on the role of senior broadcast producer in August, having previously served as a senior producer since January 2018.

Guzman’s tenure at CBS Evening News began alongside anchor Jeff Glor in 2017, where he played a key role in reviving the “Eye on America” series known for its long-form reporting and in-depth storytelling. Dokoupil, who was a contributor to the series, has now taken over as anchor following Norah O’Donnell, John Dickerson, and Maurice DuBois.

Despite these changes, “CBS Evening News” continues to lag behind its competitors, ABC’s “World News Tonight” and NBC’s “NBC Nightly News.” Guzman brings a wealth of experience to his role, having previously worked on shows like “Vice News Tonight” and “CBSN: On Assignment.”

The departure of Guzman marks another chapter in the ongoing evolution of the CBS Evening News, as the show strives to stay competitive in the ever-changing landscape of broadcast journalism.
