Central Saint Martins Showcases Emerging Design Talent
The Central Saint Martins graduate show was a display of incredible talent and creativity, with standout collections that pushed boundaries and explored cultural themes. One such standout was Ayham Hassan, a student from Ramallah in the West Bank, whose powerful collection celebrated Palestinian craft and traditions that have been displaced by conflict. His collection, described as “a contemplation on the reality of genocide and the quest for liberation,” resonated with the ongoing protests for Palestine outside the show venue.
Hassan’s collection featured metallic, armor-like triangles symbolizing spiritual protection, as well as a poignant piece paying homage to the destroyed village of Abu Shusha, incorporating historic woven patterns from the region. One particularly moving piece was a floor-sweeping headscarf knitted by Hassan’s mother in the West Bank, symbolizing her presence at the show. The collection was a beautiful fusion of tradition, craftsmanship, and storytelling.
The top three prizes of the evening were judged by Daniel Lee of Burberry, who was impressed by the diverse and innovative designs on display. The second runner-up was Haseeb Hassan, a British-Pakistani designer whose collection drew inspiration from Madame Grès’s draping techniques and vintage Pakistani postage stamps. His designs showcased graphic impact and exceptional craftsmanship, with standout pieces like a dusty blue leather shalwar kameez adorned with Arabic calligraphy.
The first runner-up prize went to Hannah Smith, whose collection focused on adaptive fashion inspired by wrought-iron gates. She approached wheelchair design as an asset, creating pieces that seamlessly integrated with the body. Technical experiments like slicing leather into knotted ribbons and draping woolen tailoring fabric across wheelchairs demonstrated her innovative approach to fashion.
The Central Saint Martins graduate show was a celebration of diversity, creativity, and social consciousness, with emerging designers like Ayham Hassan, Haseeb Hassan, and Hannah Smith pushing boundaries and redefining the fashion landscape.
