Christina Bothwell, an artist known for her ethereal glass and ceramic sculptures, has always been dedicated to creating the best work possible. However, as she has matured in her practice, she has come to realize that she is part of a larger artistic continuum. She views her role as laying the groundwork for future generations of artists, a responsibility she takes seriously.

Collaborating with her husband, Robert Bender, Bothwell combines glass and ceramic elements with wood to create intricate pieces that blur the lines between reality and fantasy. Her work often features botanical details and other small elements painted in oil, resulting in dreamlike sculptures that explore themes of spirituality and interspecies connections.

Recently, Bothwell faced a health crisis that disrupted her creative process and left her feeling disconnected from her art. Despite questioning the purpose of her work, she eventually found solace in the act of creating and the sense of fulfillment it brought her. This experience led her to explore new themes in her art, focusing on concepts of emergence, change, and courage.

One of Bothwell’s current projects involves sculpting seashells with figures nestled inside, symbolizing the journey of stepping out of one’s comfort zone into the unknown. She meticulously crafts each shell from beeswax before casting them in glass, while the figures are made from raku, a type of ceramic firing technique.

Through her work, Bothwell aims to inspire others to let go of the past and embrace new ideas with ease and courage. Her sculptures serve as reminders of the beauty and complexity of the world around us, inviting viewers to contemplate the interconnectedness of all living beings.
