In Cochabamba, Bolivia, a remarkable group of women skateboarders are making waves by blending contemporary sport with traditional Indigenous heritage. The Imillaskate collective, known for wearing customary Quechuan attire like brimmed sombreros and colorful polleras, is challenging stereotypes and changing attitudes toward Indigenous traditions.

These inspiring women, featured in Celia D. Luna’s captivating photo series “Cholitas Bravas,” are the focus of a new short documentary by directors Rebecca Basaure and Mariano Carranza, produced by NOWNESS. The film sheds light on the group’s unique style, their mission to build a skatepark, and their efforts to empower the community through skateboarding.

Historically, Quechuan and Aymara women were marginalized and derogatorily labeled as “cholitas,” excluded from mainstream society. However, the distinctive style of long braids, bowler hats, and full skirts—inspired by both Indigenous and Spanish influences—has evolved into a symbol of cultural pride and identity.

Deysī, a co-founder of Imillaskate and a renowned skater, shares the profound impact of embracing her heritage. She recalls her mother’s surprise when she first dressed as a cholita, emphasizing that wearing a pollera is a way to honor her Indigenous roots and family legacy. For Deysī, the pollera symbolizes her identity and connection to her ancestors.

The documentary also addresses gender inequalities in Bolivian society, highlighting the importance of mutual support among the members of Imillaskate. Through major life transitions like motherhood and loss, these women rely on each other for strength and solidarity. As Ellī, another co-founder, explains, their collective mindset as Indigenous Quechuas fosters a sense of community and empowerment.

NOWNESS, a platform that celebrates art, food, travel, fashion, and more, showcases the full documentary on YouTube, offering viewers a glimpse into the world of Imillaskate. The film captures the spirit of these remarkable women as they challenge stereotypes, embrace their heritage, and inspire others through their passion for skateboarding.
