The year 2025 saw a brief period of panic and concern among astronomers and space agencies around the world when a building-sized asteroid was discovered hurtling towards Earth. Named 2024 YR4, this asteroid was first detected in late December 2024 and was estimated to be between 40 and 90 meters wide. The possible trajectories of this asteroid through our solar system indicated a narrow window that included Earth, leading astronomers to calculate a 1-in-83 chance of it striking the planet in 2032.

As more observations were made of the asteroid’s trajectory in the early months of 2025, the chances of impact increased, reaching a perilous level of a 1-in-32 chance by February. If the asteroid had struck near a city, the aftermath would have been devastating, equivalent to detonating megatonnes of TNT. The potential impact led to the asteroid briefly being designated as a level 3 on the Torino rating system, prompting United Nations-affiliated bodies to consider the need for an asteroid-deflection mission.

Throughout this period, space agencies worldwide collaborated to monitor and analyze the asteroid’s path. The European Space Agency (ESA) noted that the event was a valuable learning experience that improved asteroid detection methods and understanding. By February 20, astronomers had refined the asteroid’s orbit to significantly reduce the risk of an impact on Earth, leading to a downgrade in the chances of a collision.

While the risk of an impact on Earth was effectively ruled out, the possibility of the asteroid colliding with the moon remains at around 4% for 2032. Scientists are considering the potential consequences of a moon impact, including the release of satellite-destroying debris towards Earth. Contingency plans involving deflection missions, such as using small satellites or nuclear bombs, are being explored cautiously to ensure safety.

Despite the current low risk of a moon impact, space agencies are keeping a close watch on 2024 YR4, which will not be visible until 2028. The James Webb Space Telescope is poised to provide crucial observations in February 2026, offering insights that could inform future decisions on potential asteroid missions. As the asteroid’s visibility improves, scientists will continue to assess the need for intervention to mitigate any potential threats posed by 2024 YR4. The year 2027 is set to bring an extraordinary celestial event that will captivate skywatchers around the world. On 2 August 2027, a total solar eclipse will occur, offering a rare opportunity to witness the moon completely block out the sun, casting a shadow over the Earth.

To make this experience even more unforgettable, a special cruise has been organized to provide a unique vantage point for viewing the eclipse. The cruise will take passengers on a journey through the waters of Spain and Morocco aboard the Douglas Mawson, a state-of-the-art expedition ship equipped with all the amenities needed for a comfortable and luxurious voyage.

The highlight of the cruise will undoubtedly be the total solar eclipse, which is expected to be the longest of the century. As the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, plunging the surrounding area into darkness, passengers will have the opportunity to witness this rare and awe-inspiring phenomenon from the deck of the ship.

In addition to the eclipse viewing, the cruise will also offer opportunities to explore the rich cultural heritage of Spain and Morocco, with excursions to historic sites, local markets, and traditional restaurants. Passengers will have the chance to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture of these two countries while enjoying the luxurious accommodations and amenities of the Douglas Mawson.
