Charlotte Gainsbourg’s Enigmatic New Music Video: A Stylish Tribute to Cinema
The journey begins with a vintage Chevrolet Impala convertible gliding through the golden hues of a California sunset. Behind the wheel is Charlotte Gainsbourg, who effortlessly navigates the winding road while donning a luxurious green velvet Saint Laurent jacket and chic sunglasses. She playfully climbs onto the seats, allowing the gentle breeze to dance through her hair, embodying an atmosphere that is both relaxed and exhilarating.
Enhancing this captivating visual experience are the moody, waltzing synths crafted by the renowned French producer Sebastian. His composition echoes the dreamy yet slightly unsettling scores created by Angelo Badalamenti, infamous for his work on David Lynch’s films. “I found myself deeply inspired by Lynch after his passing,” Gainsbourg shares. “This piece felt like a fitting homage to him.”
Collaborating with Gainsbourg on this artistic endeavor is the illustrious Anthony Vaccarello, the creative director of Saint Laurent. He stepped into the director’s role for the first time, crafting the music video which beautifully accompanies the song originally created for the French fashion house’s fall 2025 menswear collection. It’s not the first time Vaccarello has delved into film; through Saint Laurent Productions, he has contributed to the cinematic vision of esteemed filmmakers such as Jacques Audiard, David Cronenberg, and Jim Jarmusch.
“The idea to direct the music video came together quite naturally,” Vaccarello reflects. “I wanted to experiment with new creative formats alongside an artist who shares my vision. Our discussions led us to realize this was the ideal moment to combine my aesthetic with the rhythm and emotion embedded in the music.”
It’s clear why Vaccarello and Gainsbourg find common ground, united by their profound creative passions and a mutual fascination with the more enigmatic aspects of human experience. “I first met Charlotte in 2013 when she approached me about wearing something from my Anthony Vaccarello collections for the César Awards,” recalls Vaccarello. “At first, I hesitated to respond, thinking it was a wild notion. But once the request came through a different channel, I understood it was serious. The chance to dress someone as iconic as her was remarkable for a young designer like me.”
For Gainsbourg, that initial meeting remains vivid: “He was incredibly shy, which I found endearing, and I was quite reserved myself. But we clicked! He dressed me in a way that was much sexier than I was accustomed to, and I was excited to embrace that opportunity.”
