Charlotte Gainsbourg on Embracing Comedy in ‘Étoile’
Charlotte Gainsbourg, best known for her dramatic roles in films like Melancholia and Nymphomaniac, reveals her love for comedy and her excitement for her latest project, Étoile. In a recent interview, Gainsbourg shared her enthusiasm for stepping into the world of comedy and taking on the bold and over-the-top character of Geneviève.
Despite her reputation as a dramatic actress, Gainsbourg has always been drawn to comedies. She explains, “I enjoyed doing comedy in France. I’m not always serious. I like to have fun and laugh!” Playing Geneviève allowed her to explore a different side of her acting abilities and showcase her comedic talent.
One aspect of the role that Gainsbourg particularly enjoyed was the duality of her character. She explains, “I love the way I was able to hide the depressed side of my character with her high heels, and then [become] a little more authentic when my character is by herself. This duality was fun to play because it’s going to those extremes.”
Working with the witty and fast-paced script of Étoile, Gainsbourg had a blast delivering zingers and dropping F-bombs. She praises the writing of Amy and Dan, saying, “The way Amy and Dan write is so funny, and once I discovered that it had to do with the pace and the rhythm, and understanding the words they choose, I understood what I had to aim for—and to swear as much as I can, it was so fun!”
As Gainsbourg fully embraces the comedy genre in Étoile, audiences can expect to see a side of her that may surprise them. With her comedic timing and playful approach to the role, Gainsbourg is sure to leave a lasting impression in this whimsical and hilarious film.
