Cher Served Out Scoops of Cherlatto at Faena New York’s Roller Disco Bash

On a lively corner in West Chelsea, a retro roller rink was transformed into a captivating art installation on Friday night, right in front of the newly opened Faena New York. The hotel’s courtyard became an invitation to skate on a canvas of creativity. Celebrating the city’s vibrant artist community—including artists, dancers, designers, and visionaries—Faena Art threw a roller disco like no other.

“Step into our universe—our narrative,” Alan Faena shared with Vogue. “We embrace the essence of storytelling, just as they did in the past.” Faena’s world is expansive, bringing the 1970s back to life while celebrating the iconic Roxy across the street—a cornerstone for roller disco and nightlife culture. The hotel infused the essence of The Roxy’s rich heritage into its massive art installation.

In a city that thrives on its unique rhythm, Amaze Vogue Ascend Flourish sets the tone. “Faena Art operates as a nonprofit. For 16 years, we’ve made our programs accessible and free to the public. Building communities is our mission—we’re much more than a hotel. We feature theaters, performances, and fine art that elevate the neighborhoods we inhabit,” Faena stated. “Now, we bring this essence to New York City.”

“Our inaugural project was in Central Park in 2004, created for the Whitney Biennial in collaboration with the Public Art Fund, celebrating the Central Park Dance Skaters Association,” artist Eli Sudbrack noted. “This time, we honor the queer icons of New York City—both historical and contemporary. The billboard showcases iconic figures of vogue such as Pepper LaBeija, Angie Xtravaganza, Willi Ninja—who taught Madonna the art of vogueing—along with Octavia St. Laurent, Marsha P. Johnson, and Sylvia Rivera. We are here to celebrate these trailblazers.

The spirit of the art was mirrored by the attendees. Cher made an appearance with her Cherlato (gelato crafted by Chef Giapo) truck, casually enjoying a cup of gelato. Sofi Tukker dropped beats as dancers glided around the rink. Lady Bunny energized the crowd, as spectators from the High Line above took in the vibrant atmosphere.

“Who could resist the allure of the city filled with creativity, light, and passion?” Faena had mused earlier. As the music played and the skaters danced, it became all too clear how self-answering that question truly was.
