Cher Draws Inspiration from Lucille Ball in New Memoir
In her new memoir, iconic singer and actress Cher reveals that she sought advice from legendary comedian Lucille Ball during a difficult time in her life. At the time, Lucille had just ended her marriage to Desi Arnaz, and Cher was looking for guidance on how to move on from her own abusive marriage to Sonny.
Cher writes in her memoir: “I told her, ‘Lucy, I want to leave Sonny, and you’re the only one I know that’s ever been in this same situation.’ Lucy and her husband had also become famous working together as stars on TV, and he was a huge womanizer. Lucy’s advice to me was simple yet powerful: ‘F— him, you’re the one with the talent.’
Cher later passed on this advice to Tina Turner, who was going through a traumatic marriage with Ike Turner. Cher recalls a moment when Tina came to her for help, asking for cover-up to hide a bruise on her arm. As they sat together, Tina asked Cher to share her own experience of leaving a toxic relationship.
Tina and Ike Turner eventually parted ways in 1976, marking the end of their tumultuous union.
Cher’s memoir not only sheds light on her own personal struggles but also highlights the strength and resilience of women who have overcome abusive relationships. Through the wisdom and support of women like Lucille Ball and Cher herself, others have found the courage to break free from toxic situations and reclaim their own power.
