Chevy Chase’s time on the hit NBC comedy series, Community, came to a dramatic end due to a controversial incident on set involving the use of a racial slur. The incident, which took place in 2012, has recently been revisited in an authorized documentary titled I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, directed by Jay Chandrasekhar.
Chandrasekhar, who directed multiple episodes of the show, was present on the night that Chase was ultimately fired from Community. The incident reportedly stemmed from a storyline involving a “blackface” hand puppet bit written for Chase’s character, Pierce Hawthorne. During rehearsals, Chase allegedly made a comment to his co-star, Yvette Nicole Brown, although the exact nature of the comment was not disclosed at the time.
According to reports at the time, Chase was unhappy with the creative direction of his character and used a racial slur while questioning the dialogue. It’s important to note that the slur was not directed at Donald Glover or Brown, both of whom are Black. However, Brown did leave the set following the exchange, causing production concerns.
Chandrasekhar recalled the tense atmosphere on set, with Chase denying that he had said anything offensive. The situation escalated when news of the incident leaked to the press, prompting a full-blown meltdown from Chase. The actor reportedly stormed onto the set, expressing his anger and frustration, and declaring that his career was ruined.
In the aftermath of the incident, Chase issued an apology and officially left Community after season four. His departure also coincided with a public feud with the show’s creator, Dan Harmon. Despite a brief return for one episode in 2014, Chase’s time on the series had come to a definitive end.
