A shocking incident unfolded on a Chicago train when a violent career criminal, Lawrence Reed, set an innocent young woman on fire. Reed, 50, who had more than 70 prior arrests, was captured on camera dousing the 26-year-old woman in gasoline, chasing her through the train car, and then igniting her on Monday night. The terrifying attack led to Reed being hit with a federal terrorism charge and he is scheduled to appear in federal court on Friday for his heinous actions.

The federal authorities expressed outrage over Reed’s criminal history, stating that he “had no business being on the streets.” ATF Special Agent-in-Charge Christopher Amon lamented the fact that Reed had numerous chances within the criminal justice system, yet he continued to pose a threat to society. Reed’s extensive rap sheet revealed 71 arrests in Cook County alone, with 13 convictions. At the time of the incident, Reed was out on pretrial release for an aggravated battery charge, which raised questions about the system’s decision to allow him back on the streets.

Despite prosecutors’ requests to keep Reed in custody, a judge granted him freedom, leading to the tragic consequences of the attack on the young woman. US Attorney Andrew Boutros highlighted that Reed had never been legally declared mentally incompetent, indicating a failure in addressing his mental health issues. Mayor Brandon Johnson criticized the criminal justice system and mental health institutions for their inability to intervene in Reed’s case, leading to the horrific attack on the innocent victim.

The victim, who sustained severe burns to her head and body, remains in critical condition in the hospital. The incident drew parallels to a previous attack in Charlotte, North Carolina, where a Ukrainian refugee lost her life in a train stabbing. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized the importance of community safety in preventing such tragic events from reoccurring.

The harrowing incident serves as a stark reminder of the flaws in the criminal justice system and the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing mental health issues among repeat offenders like Lawrence Reed. The victim’s ordeal underscores the urgency of implementing measures to ensure public safety and prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future.
