A harrowing incident unfolded last month in Chicago when a police sergeant narrowly escaped a potentially fatal encounter with a man wielding a large knife. Body-camera footage released by the city on Wednesday morning sheds light on the intense situation that unfolded.

The man in question, 47-year-old Alfonso Wright, was shot and killed by backup officers after he charged at the sergeant with the knife. Police believe Wright was responsible for the murder of a neighbor before officers arrived on the scene.

The incident took place at an assisted living facility on East 75th Street around 2:23 a.m. on May 5. Officers responded to reports of a man threatening residents with a knife, prompting them to visit Wright’s unit and attempt to de-escalate the situation. However, Wright’s behavior escalated as he shouted loudly before officers entered his apartment.

As the officers opened the door, Wright rushed towards them with a knife in hand. Despite the sergeant deploying a Taser in an attempt to subdue him, Wright continued to advance aggressively. The sergeant ordered him to get down multiple times, but Wright ignored the commands and lunged at the officer with the knife raised.

In a split-second decision, two officers outside the unit shot and killed Wright to prevent further harm. Subsequent investigations revealed the body of 58-year-old Keith Harding, who was found stabbed to death on the same floor where the confrontation occurred. Authorities believe Wright was responsible for Harding’s tragic demise.

The released body-camera footage provides a glimpse into the intense and life-threatening situation faced by law enforcement officers that night. While the videos are graphic, they offer valuable insight into the swift actions taken by the officers to protect themselves and others in the vicinity.

For those interested in viewing the full videos, reports, and additional materials related to the incident, they are available on the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) website. The footage serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and the split-second decisions they must make to ensure public safety.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement officers in high-stress situations and the importance of ensuring their safety while carrying out their duties.
