The city of Chicago rang in the new year with a spate of gun violence, leaving at least 11 people shot and one person dead as of 6 a.m. on January 1st.

The first shooting of 2025 took place in Wicker Park, where a 29-year-old man was shot in the leg while traveling in a vehicle on West Division around 2 a.m. Despite being wounded, the man continued to the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk Hotel where a relative called for help.

Police responded to the scene on West Division to disperse a large crowd that had gathered as nearby bars were closing, but no shots were reported in connection with the incident.

Tragically, the first known homicide of the new year occurred in the 9400 block of South Harvard at around 3:30 a.m. A 29-year-old man was found unresponsive at the scene, though details surrounding the incident remain scarce.

Several other shootings were reported throughout the early hours of the new year:

– A 33-year-old man was shot in the hand while in a car on South Kostner.
– A 44-year-old man was shot inside a home on South Green by an unidentified gunman who fled the scene.
– A 38-year-old man shot a 43-year-old woman multiple times during an argument in a home on South Sawyer.
– A 30-year-old man was shot in the face by a gunman in a red vehicle on South Champlain.
– A 32-year-old man was taken into custody for shooting a 46-year-old man in the foot on South Eberhardt.
– A 22-year-old man was shot in the leg and foot inside a home on South State.
– A 24-year-old man was shot in the ankle inside a home on South Hoyne.
– A 36-year-old woman was shot in the arm inside a residence on South Ingleside.
– A 42-year-old woman was shot in the foot in the lobby of an apartment complex on North Latrobe.
